In this fascinating book, Peter Preston gives a deep insight into his own experiences with automatic writing. The original messages that he received have been scanned and are published here for the first time. He examines the history of the phenomenon, from ancient China to the present day, and brings to life some of its most outstanding exponents including Pearl Curran and Geraldine Cummins. He also explores its relation to various art movements and techniques and how automatic drawing and painting influenced artists such as Max Ernst and Jackson Pollock. An entrancing blend of personal experience and history, this book can be enjoyed whether or not you have any experience of, or belief in, the subject. Peter Preston approaches his subject with enthusiasm, humility, and an open mind. As a journey through the history of a fascinating phenomenon, this is a book which can be enjoyed on many levels, whether your interest is historical, academic, spiritual, or simply curious.

It's been an extraordinary life. And almost all of it you will find between these pages. All the world's a stage and Peter has trodden the boards of life not only as an actor but also as a child, a parent, a sportsman, a writer, and as a survivor of all the many challenges that a variety of employments has delivered across five decades. Retirement has thrown up the opportunity to record the highs and lows of a memorable life of nearly eighty years. His achievements are balanced by his failures and the good times by the bad. Other lives were saved and there were dramatic near death experiences,. Even the shocking childhood abductions are included to help reveal how he somehow managed to arrive at the year 2026. This is very much a family history book and was created as a keepsake for his descendants. Peter would like to point out that this book was not written in pursuit of profit or literary appreciation. It arose from his frustration in trying to uncover facts about the life of his great grandfather Robert Charles Preston (1824-1910) who worked with the famous railway pioneer Samuel Morton Peto (1809-1889).
