Mrs Johnson is unhappily living out the rest of her days in an expensive nursing home and has severe misgivings about the food she is forced to endure. Her boring daily routine is supported by the staff, one of whom turns out to have more character and sincerity than she realises. Her occasional visitors include her children and their spouses and an educated African gentleman whose deserving charity she regularly supports in spite of opposition from her own family. In the end, Mrs Johnson finally finds contentment in her life when she resolves her family's complicated relationships and their uncomfortable designs on her inheritance.
Within these pages is a wide range of lively voices, who each speak their truth. Sometimes that truth includes sea birds, eggs, donkeys, or final curtains. There are voices who reminisce about crimes they may or may not have committed, or their fondness for defunct radio stations. They share memories of partners who failed to live up to expectations, and express their feelinngs about villages which may or may not be in Italy. There are conversations in casinos, nursing homes and palaces. One may find many layers of the human condition: grief, loneliness, humour, guilt, unexpected friendships. This collection offers humour, poignancy, wisdom, and sometimes just a feel-good factor.
